Hungary Retires Its Legacy Tax Filing System: What Changes From 2027

NAV is shutting down ÁNYK, the form-based filing system it has used since 2008, on 31 December 2026. From 2027, VAT and other filings move to ONYA, eÁFA, or direct machine-to-machine channels.

What Has Changed?

Hungary's tax authority, NAV, is retiring ÁNYK, its long-standing form-based filing system, on 31 December 2026. ÁNYK has been in use since 2008 and has historically handled around 30 million forms per year across all tax types — including VAT returns.

1. ÁNYK Is Being Retired

After 31 December 2026, ÁNYK will no longer be available for submitting filings to NAV. This affects any business or accountant still relying on ÁNYK-based forms or ÁNYK-compatible third-party software for their Hungarian tax filings.

2. Where Filings Move To

From 1 January 2027, filings — including VAT returns — must go through one of three replacement channels:

  • ONYA — NAV's newer online portal for individuals and businesses
  • eÁFA — NAV's dedicated electronic VAT return system
  • Machine-to-machine (M2M) / API integration — direct system-to-system submission, typically via accounting or ERP software

3. Why This Matters Specifically for VAT

VAT returns are among the filing types affected by the ÁNYK shutdown. If your Hungarian VAT filings are currently prepared or submitted through an ÁNYK-based tool — whether by you, your accountant, or a VAT agent — that workflow needs to migrate to eÁFA, ONYA, or an M2M-integrated solution before the cutover.

Quick facts

  • ÁNYK shutdown date: 31 December 2026
  • Mandatory from: 1 January 2027
  • In use since: 2008
  • Historical volume: approximately 30 million forms per year
  • Replacement channels: ONYA, eÁFA, or machine-to-machine (M2M) submission

What Should You Do Now?

  1. Ask your Hungarian accountant or VAT agent which replacement system they're migrating your filings to.
  2. If you or your software files VAT returns via ÁNYK-based tools, confirm compatibility with ONYA, eÁFA, or M2M before the end of 2026.
  3. Test early. Submit a low-stakes filing through the new channel well before your first VAT deadline after the cutover.
  4. Budget time for a learning curve — NAV's newer portals differ meaningfully from the ÁNYK form-based workflow.
